Opening Workshop, Data-Driven Decisions in Healthcare – August 26-29, 2012
Workshop Information
General Information
The Opening Workshop for this program will be held Sunday-Wednesday, August 26-29, 2012, at the Radisson Hotel Research Triangle Park, NC. The hotel is in close proximity to SAMSI.
On Sunday, August 26, there will be tutorials and expository lectures by leading researchers. From Monday to Wednesday, invited speakers and panelists will address specific research topics relevant to Working Groups in the program, which will be formed on Wednesday, August 29. A poster session and reception will take place on Monday, August 27.
Immediately following the workshop, on Thursday and Friday, the Working Groups will convene at SAMSI. In these meetings each working group identifies initial research activities and relevant datasets for the program year. These foci will, of course, evolve over the year, and Working Groups may either merge or emerge as the research progresses.
The Opening Workshop is anticipated to focus on theory, methodology, practice and policy relevant to the two main thrusts:
- Operations Research Modeling (ORM), with particular emphasis on resource allocation. The depth of interest in healthcare in the operations research community is enormous. Meeting programs of INFORMS, the principal society, contain dozens of sessions on healthcare topics
- Health Outcomes Research, including Comparative Effectiveness Research (CER), observational studies and predictive modeling.
Speakers are currently being invited, and will come from academia, government and industry. A poster sales talk session will give each poster presenter two minutes to attract poster session attendees to view his or her work. An “open mike” session will provide opportunities to raise issues not part of the formal program.
APPLICATION
To begin the application process login and register, then click on "Apply for Workshop" button at the top of this page. When you have completed the form, be sure to click on the green button.
This form also includes the application for financial support. You will be notified as soon as possible after your application if your participation will be possible; regrettably, limited seating will preclude acceptance of all applications. New researchers (graduate students, postdocs, and faculty in the early stages of their careers) and members of underrepresented groups are especially encouraged to apply.
The application/registration deadline is August 3, 2012. Note, however, that capacity might be reached before this deadline. Also, any application that requests support for expenses should typically be submitted at least 6 weeks in advance of the workshop.
Please make reservations at the Radisson RTP as soon as possible. The SAMSI room block and rate ($91) is effective until August 3, 2012. After this date, there is no guarantee a room will be available. If you have a change in plans, individual room reservations must be cancelled 72 hours prior to arrival. Check-in is at 3:00 PM; check-out is 12:00 noon.
If you need further information please send an email to healthcare@samsi.info.
