Opening Workshop, Data-Driven Decisions in Healthcare – August 26-29, 2012

Workshop Information

August 26, 2012 - 9:15am - August 29, 2012 - 3:00pm

General Information

The Opening Workshop for this program was held Sunday-Wednesday, August 26-29, 2012, at the Radisson Hotel Research Triangle Park, NC. The hotel is in close proximity to SAMSI.

On Sunday, August 26, there were tutorials and expository lectures by leading researchers. From Monday to Wednesday, invited speakers and panelists addressed specific research topics relevant to Working Groups in the program, which were formed on Wednesday, August 29. A poster session and reception took place on Monday, August 27.

Immediately following the workshop, on Thursday and Friday, the Working Groups convened at SAMSI. In these meetings each working group identified initial research activities and relevant datasets for the program year.

The Opening Workshop focused on theory, methodology, practice and policy relevant to the two main thrusts:

  • Operations Research Modeling (ORM), with particular emphasis on resource allocation. The depth of interest in healthcare in the operations research community is enormous. Meeting programs of INFORMS, the principal society, contain dozens of sessions on healthcare topics
  • Health Outcomes Research, including Comparative Effectiveness Research (CER), observational studies and predictive modeling.
