Interdisciplinary Workshop for Undergraduate Students - May 14-18, 2012

Workshop Information

May 14, 2012 - 8:15am - May 18, 2012 - 1:00pm

This week long workshop will provide an introduction to the field of uncertainty quantification (UQ) to students from the mathematical and statistical sciences. The overall goal of the workshop is to illustrate to need for and power of quantitative methods to confront the very hardest and most important data- and model-driven scientific challenges.

The students will work on controlling specific stochastic dynamical systems. At the end of the workshop, it is expected that they will have a working knowledge of variational techniques within the above framework, simple Kalman filters and Monte Carlo approaches. Emphasis will be put on practical issues and implementation. The students will work in groups of three under the supervision of SAMSI researchers and postdocs.

The deadline to apply is April 20, 2012.

Due to space considerations, participation is restricted and will be offered to approximately 30 individuals selected from the applicant pool. Participants are expected to arrive for the workshop on Sunday, May 13, 2012 and remain in continuous attendance until 12:00 pm on Friday, May 18, 2012.

Upon acceptance for the program, individuals must confirm by email within three days their intention to participate (otherwise their place will be given to another applicant). Accepted participants will be advised regarding airfares and will need to purchase plane tickets with a three-week advance fare.
