SAMSI Director Search

The Statistical and Applied Mathematical Sciences Institute (SAMSI) is seeking its next Director, to begin the position in July 2010. Candidates with vision, energy and experience are encouraged to apply. The Directorship carries a tenured faculty position at one of the SAMSI partner universities: Duke University, North Carolina State University, or the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. The start date for the faculty position could be earlier than July 2010. Duties of the Director include:

  • Actively search out and develop innovative program ideas, and build contacts with organizers;
  • Work with organizers to see that good program ideas are well-executed;
  • Engage in efforts to promote interdisciplinary in SAMSI programs;
  • Actively seek ways to maximize involvement of women and minorities in SAMSI programs, at all stages of planning and implementation;
  • Seek out funding opportunities that are synergistic with SAMSI's mission;
  • See that an effective education and outreach program is achieved;
  • Work in partnership with SAMSI's Governing Board, National Advisory Council and Science Advisory Board, and the National Science Foundation;
  • Effectively coordinate with SAMSI's partner universities and departments, and with the National Institute of Statistical Sciences;
  • Actively seek other institutions with which to partner, and coordinate activities with the other mathematical sciences institutes;
  • Play a central role in recruiting SAMSI's Associate Directors;
  • Actively work to build and maintain a first-rate staff;
  • Prepare budgets to present to the Governing Board and National Science Foundation, and oversee the prudent management of SAMSI's funds;
  • See that annual reports are prepared, effective evaluation of SAMSI activities is undertaken, and results from SAMSI programs are widely disseminated;
  • Plan for SAMSI's long-term growth and development.

SAMSI is located in Research Triangle Park in North Carolina, and shares space with the National Institute of Statistical Sciences. The region is rich in terms of statistical and applied mathematical expertise, and in interdisciplinary scientists which are essential to many SAMSI programs.
