IMSM – History and Past Workshops

Origins

The IMSM workshop started out as the Industrial Mathematics Modeling Workshop (IMMW) at the Claremont Graduate School, where Ellis Cumberbatch organized the first two workshops in the summers of 1993 and 1994.

The workshop then moved to NCSU where it has been held ever since, with faculty from the NCSU Mathematics Department at the helm: Hien Tran (1995-1998), Ralph Smith (1999-2000), Pierre Gremaud (2001-2002), Negash Medhin (2003-2004), Mansoor Haider (2005-2006), Sharon Lubkin (2007-2008), Ilse Ipsen (2009-2016), and since 2017 again Mansoor Haider.

While a number of workshops with a similar format are in existence around the world, the IMSM workshop is the only one that fully integrates mathematical and statistical modeling with disciplinary sciences. To emphasize the importance of statistics, the name was changed in 2003 from IMMW to IMSM.
