Visiting and Employment Opportunities for 2004-05

Visiting and employment opportunities at the Statistical and Applied Mathematical Sciences Institute during 2004-2005 include the following.

• Long-term research visitors, associated with the individual SAMSI programs, for periods of up to one-year. SAMSI support for such visitors is typically in the form of expense reimbursement. To explore possibilities as a long-term visitor, use the contact addresses for the individual programs, or contact Jim Berger ([email protected]).

• Postdoctoral fellowships are available (up to 5), associated with individual SAMSI programs, with appointments beginning in July or September, 2004; or January, 2005. Appointments will typically be for two years and be made jointly between SAMSI and an associated organization. Extremely competitive salaries will be offered. • SAMSI University Fellow appointments (up to 3) are senior level positions that are joint with Partner universities. See www.samsi.info/fellows04.html for more information.

• SAMSI New Researcher fellowships (up to 3) provide support of up to $20,000 in salary for semester to year-long visiting outstanding researchers who have received their Ph.D. within the previous 8 years. See www.samsi.info/fellows04.html for more information.

• Visiting graduate student positions are available, although it is expected that the student�s advisor will be in residence for much of the time that the student is visiting. Applications should consist of a letter indicating the SAMSI programs of interest, a vita, and a letter from the student�s advisor.

Members of under-represented groups are particularly encouraged to apply for these positions.

SAMSI programs planned for the year 2003-04 are:

• Computational Biology of Infectious Disease, with emphasis on both population dynamics (with topics ranging from epidemiology to evolution) and genomic dynamics (Fall 2004 � Spring 2005).

• Social Sciences, with focus on use of latent variables at the interface of multilevel and structural equation modeling, longitudinal analysis, social networks and causality (Fall 2004 � Spring 2005).

• Data Assimilation, with emphasis on model adaptation, assimilation of data in coupled models, optimal design for data assimilation, and assimilation of non-prognostic variables (Spring 2005).

 

SAMSI (www.samsi.info) is a partnership between the National Science Foundation and the consortium of Duke University, North Carolina State University (NCSU), the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (UNC), and the National Institute of Statistical Sciences (NISS). SAMSI is forging a new synthesis of the statistical sciences and the applied mathematical sciences with disciplinary science to confront the very hardest and most important data- and model-driven scientific challenges. With a directorate consisting of James Berger (Duke), H.T. Banks (NCSU), J.S. Marron (UNC), and Alan F. Karr (NISS), SAMSI is located at the NISS building in Research Triangle Park in North Carolina.
