Postdoctoral Appointments for 2004-05

The Statistical and Applied Mathematical Sciences Institute (SAMSI) is soliciting applications from statistical and mathematical scientists for up to five postdoctoral positions, to begin September, 2004, or January, 2005. Appointments, at highly competitive salaries, will typically be for two years and be made jointly between SAMSI and one of its Partners. Applicants should have received (or expect to complete) a doctorate in 1999 or later. Members of under-represented groups are particularly encouraged to apply.

SAMSI is a national institute formed by a partnership between the National Science Foundation and the consortium of Duke University, North Carolina State University (NCSU), the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (UNC), and the National Institute of Statistical Sciences (NISS). SAMSI is forging a new synthesis of the statistical sciences and the applied mathematical sciences with disciplinary science to confront the very hardest and most important data- and model-driven scientific challenges. With a directorate consisting of James Berger (Duke), H.T. Banks (NCSU), J.S. Marron (UNC), and Alan F. Karr (NISS), SAMSI is located at the NISS building in Research Triangle Park in North Carolina. For more information, see www.samsi.info.

SAMSI programs planned for the year 2004-05 are:

Postdoctoral Fellows will participate in one or more of these research programs, in collaboration with statisticians, applied mathematicians and disciplinary scientists from universities, industry, national laboratories and government agencies. SAMSI will provide exceptional mentoring, with each Postdoctoral Fellow having at least two primary mentors.

Criteria for selection include demonstrated research ability in statistical and/or applied mathematical sciences, interest and (to a lesser degree) experience in the SAMSI program areas and vision, and strength in computation and in verbal and written communication.

Applications should consist of a letter of interest containing addresses (including E-mail), telephone numbers and citizenship status; three letters of reference; a biographical sketch; a publication record or thesis topic, with abstracts of important items; and a one-page statement of interest responding to the criteria and projects listed above. The items should be submitted electronically, as PDF files if possible (Microsoft Word and PostScript are also acceptable), and sent to [email protected]. Also send requests for additional information to this address. Those preferring to submit applications by mail, can send them to
