University and New Researcher Fellowship Opportunities for 2004-05

The Statistical and Applied Mathematical Sciences Institute (SAMSI) is soliciting applications from statistical and mathematical scientists for three SAMSI University Fellowships and three New Researcher Fellowships, to begin September, 2004, or January, 2005. Appointments for the University Fellowships are made jointly between SAMSI and one of its partner universities, while the New Researcher Fellowship appointments are made by SAMSI. New Researchers should have received their Ph.D. within the previous 8 years. Members of under-represented groups are particularly encouraged to apply.

SAMSI is a national institute formed by a partnership between the National Science Foundation and the consortium of Duke University, North Carolina State University (NCSU), the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (UNC) and the National Institute of Statistical Sciences (NISS). SAMSI is forging a new synthesis of the statistical sciences and the applied mathematical sciences with disciplinary science to confront the very hardest and most important data- and model-driven scientific challenges. With a directorate consisting of James Berger (Duke), H. T. Banks (NCSU), J. S. Marron (UNC), and Alan F. Karr (NISS), SAMSI is located at the NISS building in Research Triangle Park in North Carolina.

SAMSI programs planned for the year 2004-05 are:

SAMSI University Fellows and New Researcher Fellows will participate in one or more of these research programs, in collaboration with statisticians, applied mathematicians and disciplinary scientists from universities, industry, national laboratories and government agencies.  SAMSI University Fellows will also join regular academic life at one of SAMSIs partner universities, including teaching a seminar or course at the university or at SAMSI.

Appointments will ideally be for one year, although appointments for one semester can be considered.  The available salary is at most a half years support for SAMSI University Fellows and $20,000 for new researchers, and so is ideal for sabbatical visitors with partial support from their home institutions.

Interested individuals should contact [email protected] for more information. Formal applications will require a letter of interest containing addresses (including E-mail), telephone numbers and a current CV. The items should be submitted electronically, as PDF files if possible (Microsoft Word and PostScript are also acceptable), and sent to [email protected]. Those preferring to submit applications by mail, can send them to
