General Information

Large Graphical Models and Random Matrices is a workshop within the SAMSI program on High Dimensional Inference and Random Matrices. It will be held November 9-11, 2006 at the MCNC Auditorium and the Radisson Hotel RTP in Research Triangle Park, NC.

The workshop will focus in the following topics:

  • Transforming real-valued matrices to study induced associations in linear systems and transforming binary matrices to study the preservation of independencies in Markov graphs

  • Matrix and path criteria for Markov equivalence, for separation in Markov graphs and for identification of corresponding models under given distributional assumptions

  • The integration of clustering and of censoring into graphical models

  • Issues of model fitting, model selection and model uncertainty for graphical models

  • Consequences for a given generating process of omitting variables and of conditioning on variables or on the propensity score

The emphasis will be on discussions, interaction, problem solving and the identification of new problems in a cross-disciplinary setting, concentrating on high-dimensional problems and exploring the possible use and applications of large random matrices.

We will start on the first day with several survey type lectures and then continue with the more specialized topics, discussions and brains-storming sessions.

Present list of confirmed participants include Ayesha Ali (University of Guelph, Canada), Xavier de Luna (University of Umeo, Sweden), David Cox (Oxford University, UK), Arthur Dempster (Harvard University, USA), Constantine Frangakis (John Hopkins, USA), Anna Gotthard (University of Florence, Italy), Oscar Hammar (Chalmers/ Gothenburg University, Sweden), Ben Hansen (University of Michigan, USA), Sonja Kuhnt (Eindhoven University of Technology, Netherlands), Giovanni Marchetti, (University of Florence, Italy), Hélène Massam (York University, Canada), Richard Scheines (Carnegie Mellon University, USA), Elena Stanghellini (University of Perugia, Italy), Egil Ferkingstad (University of Oslo, Norway), Nanny Wermuth, (Chalmers/ Gothenburg University, Sweden), and Michael Wiedenbeck (ZUMA Mannheim, Germany).

Workshop Committee: Nanny Wermuth (Chalmers/University of Gothenburg, Chair), Hélène Massam (York University), D.R. Cox (Oxford University)

Application

Interested individuals should apply, using the ON-LINE APPLICATION FORM. This form also includes the application for financial support. You will be notified as soon as possible after your application if your participation will be possible; regrettably, limited seating will preclude acceptance of all applications. New researchers (graduate students, postdocs, and faculty in the early stages of their careers) and members of underrepresented groups are especially encouraged to apply.

The application/registration deadline is November 3, 2006

In order to ensure your application is correct, we ask that you:

  • refresh/reload the application/registration page to ensure you have all updates

  • type in your information (cutting and pasting will distort the information we receive)

  • make any clarifications/corrections, in the Special Requests section

  • click the submit button only once

Please make reservations at the Radisson as soon as possible. The SAMSI room block for the Radisson is effective until October 25, 2006. After this date, there is no guarantee a room will be available.  If you have a change in plans, individual room reservations must be cancelled 72 hours prior to arrival. Check-in is at 3:00 PM; check-out is 12:00 noon.
