2007-08 Program on Random Media

Course Name: Numerical Methods for Free Boundary and Moving Interface Problems

Course web page TBA

Instructors: Kazi Ito and Zhilin Li, North Carolina State University; and Hongkai Zhao, University of California - Irvine

Course Day and Time: Wednesday 4:30 - 7:00, beginning September 5, 2007
Room 104 NISS Building

Short Course Description: The main focus will be on numerical methods for moving interface and free boundary problems with applications in fluid mechanics, electro-magnetics, mathematical biology, image processing, and inverse problems. These problems may involve stochastic modeling, phase transition, and discontinuities in physical properties. We will discuss how to use finite difference/finite element methods to solve these problems efficiently. Some state of the art techniques such as harmonic averaging, smoothing method, immersed boundary method, the immersed interface method, and the level set methods will be covered. Numerical issues for dealing with random effects will also be discussed. The course will be self-contained as much as possible.
