DESCRIPTION:""

The Mathematical Sciences Diversity Initiative held the Modern Math Workshop (MMW) prior to the SACNAS National Conference. The 2018 MMW was hosted by SAMSI at the Henry B. Gonzalez Convention Center, San Antonio, Texas on October 10th and 11th, 2018. This workshop focused on encouraging undergraduates, graduate students and recent PhDs from underrepresented minority groups to pursue careers in the mathematical sciences and build research and mentoring networks. The Modern Math Workshop is a pre-conference event at the SACNAS National Conference. The MMW included a keynote lecture, mini-courses, research talks, a question and answer session and a reception. This year’s reception was sponsored by USAA.

Mini-Courses:

Two half-day mini-courses were offered on October 10, from 1:00-4:30pm, running concurrently. These mini-courses were for undergraduate students.

Research Talks:

The intended audience was graduate students and recent PhD’s. Each participating institute provided a speaker who presented a research talk. All presentations were expository in nature, intended for mathematical scientists and students not necessarily working in these areas but interested in learning about new developments and the possibility of spending some time at one of the Math Institutes. Due to the diverse portfolio of the Institutes, these talks exposed participants to a broad range of topics in modern mathematics. These sessions ran over the two days of the Modern Math Workshop: 1:00-4:30pm on the afternoon of Wednesday, October 10, and 9:00-11:30am the morning of Thursday, October 11.

Reception:

The NSF Math Institutes’ networking reception, sponsored by USAA, immediately followed the keynote lecture at 5:45pm on Wednesday, October 10.

Q&A Session:

The closing session of the workshop included a Q&A with NSF Math Institute representatives, 11:30am-12:30pm on Thursday, October 11.
