Workshop Information

May 16, 2011 - 8:00am - May 20, 2011 - 12:00pm

This week long workshop will provide an introduction to the field of epidemiology to students and faculty from the mathematical and statistical sciences. The overall goal of the workshop is to illustrate to need for and power of quantitative methods to confront the very hardest and most important data- and model-driven scientific challenges.

The students will attend tutorials on modeling and as well on mathematical and statistical methods to analyze epidemiological data. They will work in small groups and take part in several hands-on lab sessions to study and analyze CDC data. Concepts from network science will be introduced, discussed and applied. The students will also attend  professional development panels addressing career and graduate studies issues. At the end of the week, the student groups will present their work.

A limited number of faculty will also be invited to attend a parallel workshop. The faculty workshop will last from Monday morning till mid-day on Wednesday. While some lectures and the panels will be attended together with the students, most of the faculty activities will be conducted independently. The faculty will be involved in the development of a teaching module on epidemiology; related computational, mathematical and statistical concepts will be reviewed. The faculty will also participate in discussion related to interdisciplinary curriculum development.

Interested faculty should contact [email protected].
