2011-12 UQ Program: Methodology Opening Workshop and Tutorials

The Opening Workshop for the Methodology theme of the SAMSI program on Uncertainty Quantification will be held on Wednesday-Saturday, September 7-10, 2011, at the Radisson RTP in Research Triangle Park, NC. The location is in close proximity to SAMSI.

From mid-day Wednesday to Saturday evening, invited speakers will give presentations. For each of the five themes described below, one presentation will be introductory. There will be a poster session and reception on Wednesday, September 7. Additional activities will be organized later during the weekend.

The workshop will focus on the following five complementary themes

(1) Foundations, theory and methods that are related to uncertainty quantification, including for example; treatment of model error, inference with multi-models, treatment of multiscale models, numerical error estimation, reduced order modeling, and theoretical foundations of various UQ problems.

(2) Representation and propagation of uncertainty, including for example; efficient representations of uncertainty, integration of different representations of uncertainty and error, propagation of uncertainty through complex physical models, exploiting mathematical structure of models for propagation, and identification of sensitivity of models.

(3) Data assimilation, including for example; incorporating information from disparate and sparse data sets, filtering and forecasting, response surface techniques, sampling based approaches, derivative/variational-based approaches.

(4) Inverse problem and calibration, including for example; treating sparse and noisy data, use of reduced order models, regularization and optimization, integration of parameter and prediction uncertainty, use of derivative information from physics-based models.

(5) Rare events, including for example; use of reduced order models, use of computational and physics models to detect rare events, investigation of relevant statistical methodologies, optimization techniques.

Organizers: Dan Cooley, Don Estep, Max Gunzburger, Jan Hannig, David Higdon, Jeff Wu

APPLICATION

To begin the application process login and register, then click on "Apply for workshop" at the top of this page.  Be sure to click on the green "Sign Up" button at the end of the application form.

This form also includes the application for financial support. You will be notified as soon as possible after your application if your participation will be possible; regrettably, limited seating will preclude acceptance of all applications. New researchers (graduate students, postdocs, and faculty in the early stages of their careers) and members of underrepresented groups are especially encouraged to apply.

The application/registration deadline is July 29, 2011. Note, however, that capacity might be reached before this deadline. Also, any application that requests support for expenses should typically be submitted at least 6 weeks in advance of the workshop.

After SAMSI has accepted your participation in the workshop, you may access the payform here.

Please make reservations at the Radisson RTP as soon as possible. The SAMSI room block and rate ($109) is effective until July 29. After this date, there is no guarantee a room will be available.  If you have a change in plans, individual room reservations must be cancelled 72 hours prior to arrival. Check-in is at 3:00 PM; check-out is 12:00 noon.

If you need further information please send an email to uq@samsi.info.
