MD Discovery & Classification in Synoptic Surveys
This astrostatistcs working group will coordinate and pursue research on challenging informatics and statistics problems that arise in the analysis of astronomical data. The working group will focus on classes of problems that are cross-cutting, arising in diverse astrophysical applications. It will bring expertise to the collaboration from other fields that are addressing discovery and analysis challenges with large data sets. The collaboration will enable new science that would not be possible to pursue using conventional methods and algorithms.
Preliminary, Partial List of Topics:
(1) images: discovering rare objects; discovering faint objects
(2) light-curves: extracting features from them, determining which of those are best to discriminate between different classes.
All these lead to characterization & classification, and include time domain surveys, as well as data from objects like the sun.
Meeting of April 23rd
Saena will present some plots based on lightcurves.
We will also discuss the abstracts/talks for the SAMSI transition meeting.
The meeting is 12pm, EST as usual.

Nonparametric Function Estimation - by David Ruppert
Meeting of March 19
Due to size limitations on google hangout, we will keep webex open and majority of us can be on it and let foreign participants on google hangout (up to 10 can be on it so some of us can be on it as well). Grace can share her computer with those on google hangout.
1. David Ruppert will give a presentation on non-parametric functional estimation. Jogesh to put the PDF on SAMSI website.
2. Discussion on light curves. SaeNa has uploaded more graphs based on the light curves to Dropbox.
3. Ashish will briefly summarize the Transients and Timing meeting held recently in India.
Meeting of Feb 26th
Dear All,
We are going to meet tomorrow. Please find the agenda as follows:
Agenda for Feb 26 meeting.
1. David Ruppert will give an overview of Functional Data Analysis.
2. A general discussion of light curves. Please have a brief look at the light curves in the shared drop box (https://www.dropbox.com/sh/d9ad83ek0653n0n/ZxD1ipTi1H) before the meeting.

Meeting on Feb 05
Dear All,
We are going to meet as usual at 12, on google hangout. The webex will be open for the first 15 minutes.
Best,
Grace
Meeting of Jan 29th
Dear All,
The meeting tomorrow will be about lightcurves. You can find data available at http://avyakta.caltech.edu:8080/science/SAMSI_DC/
Please note that we will talk through Google hangout but still keep our webex line open for the beginning. If you haven't used Google hangout before, you may find it helpful: http://support.google.com/plus/bin/answer.py?hl=en&answer=1349254
Since I will start the hangout, it helps if you could add me ([email protected]) to your circle and also let me add you back on Google+. Thanks.
Best Regards,
Grace
