SAMSI is establishing an E-mail contact list for the Focused Study Program on "Large-scale Computer Models for Environmental Systems." This program will combine the efforts of applied mathematicians, statisticians and subject matter scientists from two principal areas of environmental modeling: atmospheric science and porous media.

Activities of the program will include:

• Three intensive workshops, on Multi-Scale Modeling" (February 2-7, 2003, in Research Triangle Park, NC), on Optimization (April 28-30, 2003, in Research Triangle Park, NC) and on Spatial-Temporal Statistics (June 1-6, 2003, in Boulder, CO). The third workshop is sponsored jointly by SAMSI and the National Center for Atmospheric Research.
  
• Two graduate level courses, one on Flows in Porous Media (Tuesday afternoons, at SAMSI, 2:30-5:30 pm) and one on Environmental Statistics (Wednesday afternoons, at SAMSI, 2:30-5:30 pm).
  
• A weekly group meeting, tentatively scheduled for Wednesdays, 11am-1pm at SAMSI. This will be used to discuss progress on the whole program and for informal research presentations by program participants.

The program is an opportunity for researchers interested in the application of statistics and applied mathematics to environmental modeling to exchange research ideas on a number of levels, and to start collaborative research projects.

4. Status (e.g. faculty member, graduate student)

Researchers who wish to attend as long-term visitors should apply immediately to environment@samsi.info, as above. Researchers whose primary interest is in attending one of the workshops should contact the relevant workshop through one of the following email addresses: multiscale@samsi.info, optimization@samsi.info or spatial@samsi.info. New researchers and members of under-represented groups are especially encouraged to apply.

As an initial activity, we plan to hold one or two introductory meetings before the end of the Fall Semester, 2002. Further information will be given as soon as the E-mail list is operative.
