This SAMSI workshop has two goals:

• to provide a forum for cross-disciplinary communication on hot-topic research in random graphs, graph theory, related random matrix theory, applied statistical modelling with graphical structures, and related computational research and methods;  and

• to define specific areas for focus for a future SAMSI research program.

The workshop will bring together a small number of leading researchers from statistics, applied probability, applied mathematics and computer science, all of whom work on critical aspects of modelling, analysis and computation involving graphical models, graph theory, associated theories of random graphs and random matrices, and applications of statistical and mathematical models involving such structures in scientific and social scientific applications.  Invited speakers and poster presenters will address the interest in communicating across the subdisciplinary boundaries within the mathematical sciences � via overview/orientation discussion − as well as presenting specific research advances and highlights of research challenges from their own areas and disciplinary perspectives.  The workshop will include poster sessions and a culminating �open house� discussion that will aid in defining next steps towards a follow-on plan for a scientifically diverse but also goal-focused SAMSI research program proposal. Some candidate areas for the Workshop include:

• Graphical models in statistics, and challenges of model identification and uncertainty.
• Statistical latent factor models and latent structure in graphical models.
• Stochastic computation in graphical models (MCMC, stochastic search).
• Non-stochastic computational approaches.
• Graph partitioning methods and foundational theory.
• Random graphs in statistics and random graphs in probability.
• Random matrices arising in statistical models on graphical structures.
• Matrix theory related to applications of graphical models and graph theory in statistics.
• Core challenges to graph theory and mathematics/probability/statistics on graphs generated by current and emerging applications.
• Application contexts exemplifying the need for research advances in graphical models, graph theory at the statistics-mathematics interfaces, and in computation.
• Algorithms.
• Parallel/distributed computation and its impact or likely uses in graphical modelling. Applications in engineering, biology and genomics, social sciences, and other fields.  

Participant Information

Participation is limited due to space and the nature of the meeting as a planning workshop. If you are interested in being considered for participation, please send an email to [email protected], before the end of March, indicating a topic or topics that you might speak on, with due regard to the goals of the workshop described here.

RGSC will be a small, focused workshop of perhaps 30-35 participants, who will be asked to actively contribute and present in either an invited talk or an invited poster. Partial travel and subsistence expenses will be covered for all participants requiring assistance. 

Travel and Local Information
