An Examination of Ensemble Based Algorithms for Observational Network Design

An efficient framework for designing fixed networks of observations will be outlined. The method, called the `retrospective design algorithm', exploits archived data from an ensemble filter based data assimilation system to quantify the influence of a given fixed observational network on the error covariance estimate of the atmosphere. Numerical results in a simulated atmospheric global prediction system will be shown to demonstrate the statistical and dynamical significance of the method.
