Multiscale Model Development and Control Design

Workshop on Fluctuations and

Continuum Equations for Granular Flow

April 16-17, 2004

General Information

This workshop is intended to explore the possibility of a semester of concentration in statistical and/or problem areas that would be addressed by issues arising in granular materials, to possibly take place at SAMSI in the year 2006-7. The workshop will limited to 25 participants. The main task will be to compile a list of open questions participants during the semester. Invited speakers will give a 30-minute lecture summarizing open questions from his/her area that might benefit from a statistics approach. There will also be planning sessions to address the structure of the possible program.

Scientific Organizers:  Robert Behringer (Duke), Eric Clement (Université Pierre et Marie), Susan Coppersmith (Wisconsin), Michael Rotter (Edinburgh) and David Schaeffer (Duke)

Registration

Registration information, including requests for financial support, should be submitted as soon as possible. The registration deadline is April 5, 2004.

Please make reservations at the Radisson as soon as possible.  If you have a change in plans, individual room reservations must be cancelled 72 hours prior to arrival.  Check-in is 3:00pm, Check-out is 12:00pm.

Local Arrangements

This workshop will be held at SAMSI in the NISS building (19 T.W. Alexander Drive).  Go to the SAMSI homepage for directions and housing and transportation information for information and links to local hotels.

* During these discussion sessions, we expect to divide into two or more subgroups, presumably focusing on different aspects of planning for a semester of concentration at SAMSI.  Besides scientific issues, we might discuss whom should be invited, what related fields might enrich the program, and "the big one" -- do the potential rewards justify support of a program in granular materials by a statistics institute?
