Network Modeling for the Internet
Workshop on Internet Tomography
October 13-14, 2003
The Internet Tomography Workshop for the SAMSI/NSA program on Network Modeling will be held on Monday-Tuesday, October 13-14, 2003, at the Radisson Governors Inn in Research Triangle Park, NC. It will be preceded, on Sunday, October 12, by tutorials. It will be immediately followed by the related SAMSI/NSA Workshop on Sensor Networks, October 14-15.
Both workshops are partially funded by the
The workshop format is designed to meet the goals of SAMSI, in particular to foster involvement in on-going "Network Modeling for the Internet" Program activities. One mechanism for this is the notion of "theme problems", intended to engage a large number of researchers, and also to feed into subsequent activities. This subsequent research will be carried out by SAMSI Graduate students, Post-Docs, Triangle University faculty participants, long term visitors, and by returning workshop visitors who choose to engage in the ongoing research.
The activities of this workshop will be centered around the theme questions of
I. Validation of network tomography methods
II. Spatio-Temporal Network Data Collection and Analysis
Validation of network tomographic methods (i.e. comparison
with the "right answer") has been challenging, because the quantities that are being estimated are intrinsically hard
to measure on the full internet. But a much larger than usual testbed will be made available
through the deployment
of Avaya Labs network analysis tools on the UNC network, so that methods can be validated. Breakout discussion groups
will have the goals of determining the set of tomography methods that will be investigated, and some experimental
designs for this purpose.
Spatio-Temporal data collection and analysis is an emerging hot topic, with connections to both network
tomography and sensor networks. The topic is motivated by on-going important work in intrusion detection.
Fundamental to this area are the simultaneous collection and analysis of large data streams at a number of locations. New major questions
arise from the need for the machines at the different locations to communicate and interact with each other. The
goal of the breakout discussion groups is formulation and prioritization of a list of future research problems.
Because of the perceived benefits of contacts with researchers attending the Workshop on Sensor
Networks, attendance at both is encouraged. For example, a single registration fee may used to cover attendance at both (but
please register for both, if applicable, so that SAMSI can arrange for adequate meeting space, meals and
refreshments).
Registration
The workshop is open to participation from anyone interested and involved in research in Internet Modeling. SAMSI particularly encourages participation of new researchers and members of underrepresented groups.
Registration
information, including requests for financial support, should be submitted
as soon as possible. The registration deadline is October 1, 2003.
Local Arrangements
The Workshop is held in the Radisson Governors Inn in Research Triangle Park near SAMSI. Go to the SAMSI Web page for housing and transportation information, where you can find links to the local hotels. Transportation to SAMSI related events will also be provided.
