Network Modeling for the Internet
Workshop on Measurement and Modeling
September 18-19, 2003

NEWS FLASH!!! -- Workshop Postponed

General Information

The Measurement and Modeling Workshop for the SAMSI program on Network Modeling will be held on Thursday-Friday, September 18-19, 2003, at the Radisson Governors Inn in Research Triangle Park, NC. It will be preceded, on Wednesday, September 17, by tutorials. It will be immediately followed by the related Workshop on Congestion Control and Heavy Traffic Modeling, on September 19-20.

The workshop format is designed to meet the goals of SAMSI, in particular to foster involvement in on-going "Network Modeling for the Internet" Program activities. One mechanism for this is the notion of "theme problems," intended to engage a large number of researchers, and also to feed into subsequent activities. This subsequent research will be carried out by SAMSI Graduate students, postdoctorals, Triangle University faculty participants, long-term visitors, and by returning workshop visitors who choose to engage in the ongoing research.

The activities of this workshop will be centered around the theme question of "What causes burstiness?" There has been some controversy over this. A common statistical principle is that "causation" can only be established via a designed experiment. For this purpose, SAMSI has obtained some time in the UNC Distributed and Real Time Systems Network Lab. The theme problem of the workshop will be to decide:

  1. What are the set of problems to be tackled by a series of lab experiments?
  2. How should the experiments be designed?

Because of the benefits of contact with researchers attending the Workshop on Congestion Control and Heavy Traffic Modeling, attendance at both is encouraged.A single registration fee may used to cover attendance at both, but please register separately for each, if applicable, so that SAMSI can arrange for adequate meeting space, meals and refreshments.

Registration

The workshop is open to participation from anyone interested and involved in research in Internet Modeling. We particularly encourage participation of new researchers and members of underrepresented groups.

Registration information, including requests for financial support, should be submitted as soon as possible. The registration deadline is September 9, 2003.
